VHS Data Thinner Utility

The VHS Data Thinner utility is used to delete entries from the VHS by thinning dense data while maintaining the trend and integrity of each point. The thinner executes the rules saved to an XML file by the VHS Data Analyzer. The thinner can delete at most a few thousand entries per second so it may take days to complete a single cycle of thinning with a large VHS. Since entries are constantly aging, the thinner can be run continuously to keep up to date. After the initial thinning run, subsequent cycles should take significantly less time to execute.

When applying a thinning model to the VHS the thinner will most likely loop through the same entries multiple times. Once a set of entries has been thinned, no more entries should be deleted with subsequent thinning runs. To prevent each execution of the thinner from thinning the same points, the thinner caches the point at which it completed the previous thinning cycle. For this reason it is important to always run the thinner on the same machine.

See Scheduling Data Thinning for information about running the VHS Data Thinner from a command line.

Note: All changes performed on a VHS, including those from the Data Thinner, are propagated to replicated and forwarded services. Thinning cannot be performed directly on a replicated VHS as it is read-only.

VHS Data Thinner is stored in the CygNet\Utilities directory (VhsDataThinner.exe) on the host server.
